The state of our Union

The Declaration of Independence lays the foundation for the American Dream, by proclaiming, "all men are created equal" and asserting the right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". In 1931, J.T. Adams made the phrase "American Dream" popular, when he wrote, "life should be better and richer and fuller for every man, with opportunity for each according to his ability or achievement. ... It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position".

Today that Dream is in danger of being destroyed forever. Our political leaders openly foment racist rhetoric. The wealthy further secure their fortune at the expense of the working and middle class, through misinformation and manipulation of the very people they take advantage of. Our nation's progressive ideals are being dismantled, with no care for basic human decency. This is not merely a matter of differing political philosophies, but a calculated and systematic assault on our democracy.
